Pope Leo XIV has announced the theme for the 61st World Communications Day in Day, to be celebrated on May 9, 2027: ‘A new look: paying attention in the era of clickbait’. The Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication warned that the ‘attention economy’ is altering human cognitive abilities and the depth of interpersonal communication by fostering superficial relationships and immediate reactions. The Pope’s message proposes a ‘conversion of the gaze,’ urging individuals to treat attention as a ‘valuable resource for relationships’ rather than a commodity to be sold. This concept of ‘attention hygiene’ was previously referenced in the Pope’s encyclical on artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas. In observance of the day, religious communities, such as the Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pszów, Poland, have highlighted the importance of information responsibility and the need for mindful engagement to counter the challenges of digital content.
