Catholic leaders in Argentina and Bolivia have recently focused their teachings on themes of spiritual reconciliation and social cohesion. In mid-September, Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva of Buenos Aires emphasized the importance of permanent forgiveness, describing it as an attitude of the heart rather than the erasure of memory. Simultaneously, in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Archbishop René Leigue addressed religious community issues, urging believers to reject envy and merit-based judgments. By early October, the focus of Archbishop García Cuerva shifted toward addressing social division in Argentina. During the 52nd Youth Pilgrimage to the Basilica of Luján, which saw an estimated 2.7 million participants complete the 60-kilometer trek from Liniers despite heavy rain and cold, Liniers, the Archbishop warned that “the wounds of intolerance are festering intolerance, hatred, and social division are infecting the soul heart of the Argentine people.” He described the nation as being marked by a “famous rift” and urged citizens to become “artisans of fraternity” to support the elderly, the unemployed, and those struggling with addiction or poverty. The pilgrimage, held under the theme ‘Madre, en tu abrazo nos reconocemos hermanos’, was noted as the most attended in its history. To manage the massive crowds, authorities deployed over 430 security and traffic personnel, 80 health professionals, and more than 170 sanitation workers, establishing over 60 health posts along the route. In addition to calls for unity, the Catholic Episcopal Conference of Argentina (CEA) has engaged with Ministry of Health officials regarding disability services. While welcoming the dialogue, Church representatives stated that “gestures alone are not enough,” calling for the government to fulfill legal obligations regarding compensations and service provider rates. Preparations continue for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Argentina from November 8–11. Over 20,000 people have applied to volunteer for the event, and in Tierra del Fuego, local communities are organizing a caravan to welcome the Pope from the southern tip of the country.
