Battery manufacturers, including Chinese firm CATL, have established a significant presence in Hungary, notably through activities in Debrecen. Following reports of elevated nickel levels in nine employees, authorities suspended operations in three sections of the CATL factory in Debrecen: the laser cutting area for cathode and anode foils, the foil winding unit, and the cell drying plant. An inspection by the Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office identified serious occupational safety deficiencies, specifically noting a failure to provide adequate protective equipment. Additionally, while the first phase of the plant received an operating permit, the government office rejected an application for a second phase because the submitted blueprints did not accurately reflect the completed buildings. Local environmental groups have also expressed concerns regarding potential cathode powder leaks at the site. CATL has stated it is investigating the source of the nickel exposure and claims to have addressed the identified safety gaps. However, the company has also received a 10 million HUF fine for environmental violations. Meanwhile, Semcorp reported that independent laboratory testing of soil and groundwater samples at its Debrecen site showed no contamination from aluminum or other tested metals, suggesting that previous reports of high metal levels may have resulted from methodological issues regarding total versus dissolved metal content.
