Overview

The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) initiated a safety review of the Caulfield Racecourse track surface following reports of dangerous, loose turf plugs. During a recent Saturday meeting, officials moved the inside running rail four metres to the 11-metre position after discovering that standard track-repair plugs had failed to take, with some large clumps of turf being easily lifted by hand. This emergency maintenance occurred ahead of major Group 1 events in the spring carnival.

Following these incidents, the MRC has dismissed the safety concerns raised by jockeys, labeling the claims ‘nonsense’. CEO Tanya Fullarton stated that an internal review found no safety issues and argued that the turf plugs were correctly installed, noting that such plugs require approximately two weeks to bind with the existing turf profile.

To address the dispute and prevent future incidents, retired jockey Damien Oliver will collaborate with track managers. In consultation with Racing Victoria, Oliver will inspect tracks the day before race meetings for the remainder of the Spring Carnival and report any identified safety issues to stewards.
