Spanish striker Alvaro Morata has joined CD Leganes on a season-long loan from the Italian club Como 1907. The 33-year-old veteran, who captained Spain to Euro 2024 victory, is returning to the Madrid region to play in the Spanish second division, LaLiga Hypermotion. The transfer agreement includes an option for Leganes to purchase the player at the end of the season. To facilitate the move, Como will cover a significant portion of Morata's salary. Morata’s arrival has triggered a massive commercial surge for the club. Within 72 hours of the announcement, Leganes saw video views approach 20 million and gained 20,000 new social media followers, largely from international audiences. Season ticket sales reportedly multiplied sixfold compared to typical campaign days, and 25% of total summer jersey sales were achieved in just four days following the signing. Business Director Ivan Maroto noted that while existing contracts will not be renegotiated, the signing strengthens the club's image for sponsors and opens new commercial partnership opportunities, aligning with the recent ownership consolidation by 885 Capital. Club football director Andres Pardo previously described the acquisition as a difficult pursuit that initially seemed “impossible.” Following the signing, Pardo indicated the squad is now closed, dismissing rumors regarding the potential arrival of Dani Carvajal. This move concludes a significant squad overhaul in which the club completed between 12 and 13 signings while maintaining financial balance through Fair Play regulations. Reflecting on the transfer, Morata described the move as a “choice of pure courage” motivated by a professional project to help Leganes achieve promotion, a challenge he likened to his “personal Champions League.” He noted that he chose this path despite receiving offers from clubs competing in European competitions.
