Central Asian power grid failure and regional disputes

On August 14, 2026, a large-scale power outage affected several countries in Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. The disruptions impacted major population centers, causing issues such as stalled metro systems and traffic light failures in Almaty, as well as power failures in Bishkek and Dushanbe.

Initial reports from Kazakhstan indicated that a power surge caused by sudden changes in regional energy flow triggered emergency control systems. Uzbekistan reported that an incident in a neighboring country’s energy system impacted the broader grid, while Tajikistan declared an emergency situation within its national energy system.

Following the outages, regional disputes emerged regarding the cause of the failure. Kazakhstan’s grid operator, KEGOC, stated that its North-East-South power line became overloaded after several generators at Kyrgyzstan’s Toktogul hydropower plant shut down. Kyrgyzstan’s ministry of energy initially attributed the blackout to a high-voltage line outage in Kazakhstan, though it later acknowledged a brief shutdown at Toktogul while maintaining that the Kyrgyz system should not be held responsible for the regional failure. Tajikistan denied reports that the Nurek hydropower plant was the trigger for the instability.
