The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (TCMB) has addressed discrepancies in its balance of payments reporting. Initially, the bank released educational content to clarify the concept of “net errors and omissions,” explaining that these figures represent data discrepancies between different sources rather than actual lost funds. Following this, the TCMB announced significant revisions to its Financial Account. By identifying the sources of these discrepancies, the bank reduced the negative net errors and omissions for the period between 2023 and 2026 from $57.8 billion to $23.5 billion. Long-term cumulative figures from 2014 to May 2026 were also adjusted from negative $34.3 billion to negative $14.5 billion. The bank attributed these corrections to the integration of SWIFT data to track overseas deposits, the inclusion of profits and losses from financial derivative transactions, and adjustments to the accounting of financial flows. The TCMB emphasized that these revisions “do not alter the current account balance but rather improve the accuracy and consistency of balance of payments statistics.” Recent data for June 2026 indicates a current account deficit of $4.194 billion, though a surplus of $1.462 billion was recorded when excluding gold and energy. Trade Minister Ömer Bolat noted that while energy prices increased the deficit, improvements in goods exports helped stabilize the balance. Additionally, the TCMB reported a significant weekly increase in total reserves of approximately $13.9 billion, bringing the total to $178.366 billion. This growth was fueled by gold reserves exceeding $107 billion and a $7.2 billion rise in gross foreign exchange reserves.
