Central European drought and water scarcity

Severe drought conditions have impacted regions in Switzerland and Germany, leading to critical water shortages and environmental strain.

In Stüsslingen, Solothurn, persistent drought caused spring yields in the Rohr district to drop to critically low levels. Due to the local reliance on these specific spring captures for drinking water, the municipality issued an urgent appeal for residents to reduce consumption to prevent the sources from drying up completely.

In the German state of Baden-Württemberg, the State Agency for the Environment reported that groundwater levels reached historic lows following an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Approximately 61 percent of monitoring stations recorded levels below the normal range, a situation worsened by a September with precipitation at only 27 percent of usual levels. While a formal water extraction ban in the Enzkreis district was scheduled to expire in mid-October, officials urged continued restraint to protect aquatic life. The broader heatwave and drought conditions were linked to significant economic damage and over 16,000 heat-related deaths in Germany.
