Slovakia and the Czech Republic continue to utilize the Modernization Fund and other regional programs for infrastructure and industrial upgrades. In Slovakia, efforts have focused on the industrial and heating sectors to increase energy efficiency. The Slovak Environmental Fund is allocating 247 million euros to modernize the heating sector, with 150 million euros already contracted. A primary beneficiary is the state-owned MH Teplárenský holding (MHTH), which secured grants for nine projects totaling 50.3 million euros. Environmental and water management efforts are also expanding. The National Commission for Water and Drought has expanded its format to include an expert college for strategic planning. Minister of Agriculture Richard Takáč noted that 100 million euros have been allocated in the upcoming budget for water retention measures. Additionally, 18 million euros have been announced for investments in the Danubian region to protect the Žitný ostrov drinking water reservoir. The Slovak cabinet is also considering proposals for emergency water supply assistance by the military and financial transfers to support water management and environmental priorities. Regional development continues through the Slovakia 2021–2027 Program. In Slovakia, 26.4 million euros have been allocated to projects including a vocational training center, the Čiernohronská railway revitalization, and green infrastructure like the Voderady Eco Park. In the Czech Republic, the Brno Metropolitan Area has utilized 7.9 billion CZK of its 8 billion CZK allocation via the Integrated Territorial Investment tool, supporting 135 projects such as tram loops and social housing initiatives. As new legislative requirements regarding energy efficiency approach on January 1, 2027, Slovak self-governing regions are urging the Ministry of Economy to release EU funds from the ‘Slovensko’ Program.
