In mid‑July 2026, Hungarian customs intercepted a van from Bulgaria loaded with sealed cigarettes, leading to a fine of over 2.3 million forints for the driver. Within weeks, Slovak officials stopped a truck on the D1 highway near Štrba, confiscating 18 tons of raw tobacco – enough for about 25 million cigarettes – and estimating a consumption‑tax loss exceeding €3.2 million. The seizure was the largest in Slovakia for the year and part of a series of operations against illegal tobacco trafficking. A further Hungarian operation on 27 July seized more than 1.2 billion forints of illicit tobacco products, including 1,600 kg of consumable tobacco, roughly 5,000 boxes of untaxed cigarettes from a truck, over 10,000 boxes from storage sites and 50 untaxed e‑cigarettes. Two suspects linked to a family‑run network were detained and assets worth over 200 million forints were frozen as part of a money‑laundering probe. In August 2026, Slovak authorities expanded their crackdown by dismantling a large-scale illegal cigarette factory in eastern Slovakia, specifically in the Košice and Michalovce areas. Investigators linked the facility to an international organized crime group that intended to distribute untaxed products to Western European markets, including the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. The raid resulted in the seizure of over 9 million cigarettes, 26 tons of tobacco and raw materials, and a complete production line, with an estimated excise tax loss exceeding €6.39 million. Eighteen individuals from Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania were detained and charged with participating in an organized group related to unauthorized tobacco production.
