The Centre Chakhesang Youth Organisation (CCYO) has escalated its protest against the Nagaland government following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum. The dispute centers on the detention of Vezhoto Hesuh for an alleged wildlife offense and the seizure of birds, including a Great Barbet. The CCYO claims the birds were rescued from injury rather than captured for rearing, and they have called for an inquiry into alleged bribery regarding Hesuh’s release. As the ultimatum expired, the CCYO launched a “Non-Cooperation Movement” against the Nagaland Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department. The organization declared the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, to be “unacceptable and non-operative” within the Centre Chakhesang area and has lifted prohibitions on hunting in the region. Furthermore, the CCYO has maintained a ban on the entry of outsiders and government personnel into several villages, warning that trespassers do so at their own risk. The organization argues that government actions disregard Naga customary laws and traditional practices protected under Article 371A of the Constitution. On October 8, the CCYO announced a second phase of its agitation to begin on October 12. This phase includes planned “indefinite picketing” at the offices of the Divisional Forest Officer in Phek, as well as Forest Range Offices in Phek and Pfutsero. The organization continues to demand justice and the recognition of Chakhesang customary rights. Additionally, the CCYO stated that a ban on hunting within Centre Chakhesang territory will remain in effect starting October 9, following the conclusion of Wildlife Week.
