Cerrado biome vegetation loss and restoration

Overview

Data from MapBiomas indicates that the Brazilian Cerrado biome has experienced significant environmental degradation, losing 13.9 million hectares of riparian vegetation near rivers and watercourses between 1985 and 2025. This loss, representing 26.9% of the biome’s converted green cover, is largely attributed to the expansion of agricultural and livestock activities. Research analyst Bárbara Costa of IPAM warned that such reductions can compromise water quality and increase vulnerability to extreme weather events like droughts and intense rainfall.

In response to environmental challenges, BNDES and the Furnas Revitalization Program Management Committee are allocating R$ 17.18 million toward ecological restoration and water resource revitalization. This funding, part of the Floresta Viva program, supports five projects in Goiás, Minas Gerais, and the Distrito Federal aimed at restoring 100 hectares of degraded land each. These initiatives target areas critical to water and energy security, specifically focusing on springs and water flows that supply several hydroelectric reservoirs.
