Ceuta migrant sea disaster
Entities: Ceuta · Spanish Red Cross · Instituto de Medicina Legal (IML) of Ceuta · Guardia Civil · Morocco
Overview
In late July 2026, a massive wave of migrants from Morocco attempted to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta by sea, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life. At least 72 bodies were initially recovered, overwhelming local forensic capacity and prompting authorities to convert a disused former military hospital into a large‑scale morgue to handle the unprecedented number of casualties.
By early August, the death toll had risen to 82 as additional bodies were located by the Guardia Civil. Autopsies and identification efforts continued, with fingerprint matching confirming two victims and DNA testing underway for several others. Specialized underwater rescue teams remained active in the search for missing persons, while the Institute of Legal Medicine coordinated the ongoing forensic response.
