A fast-moving fire during a live-fire training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta resulted in the deaths of four military members: Sergeant Morgan Wong, 26, of Edmonton; Private Shaun Farrell, 23, of Prince Albert, Sask.; Private Aidan Goulding, 23, of North Vancouver; and Private Hayden Lykkemark, 19, of Langley, B.C. All four deceased were members of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, while approximately 84 soldiers of Charlie Company were conducting combat training involving hand grenades and simulated attacks. Major-General Wade Rutland reported that a grass fire ignited roughly one kilometre away and spread with extreme speed following a sudden wind shift. Wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h caused the flames to jump the distance—reportedly traveling approximately one kilometre in just 36 seconds—and overtake the unit in less than a minute. Military officials specified that the fire originated on an automatic grenade launcher range in a “permanent danger area,” which initially prevented firefighters from combating the flames directly. Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan noted that the rapid speed of the fire was a primary factor in preventing escape. Officials confirmed there was no indication of an explosion. The fire caused dozens of injuries, with 39 people hospitalized. As of October 23, 27 individuals remained hospitalized, with 13 in critical condition. Among the injured is Cpl. Liam Keane, a medic who was critically injured after reportedly running into the fire multiple times to rescue fellow soldiers. Fifty investigators, including the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, are examining the cause. Investigations are specifically reviewing decision-making processes, including why training continued as the situation developed. On October 25, a memorial service was held in Edmonton for Sgt. Morgan Wong.
