Overview

South Korean prosecutors continued their investigation of entertainment executive Cha Ga‑won, head of the label ONE HUNDRED (also reported as Wonha Red) and chairman of Piac Group. After two earlier arrest‑warrant requests were rejected, a third request was filed on 28 June, alleging fraud of about 300 billion won tied to an advance of 242 billion won from the firm Nomus for an intellectual‑property joint venture that never materialised. Police say Cha entered overlapping contracts and used a contract‑splitting scheme to conceal debts.

The Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant on 3 August, and Cha was taken into custody at the Mapo Police Station on 4 August. Prosecutors cited a risk of evidence destruction. The alleged fraud includes a 24 billion‑won advance from technology firm Knowmerce Corp and a 5.4 billion‑won jeonse contract that was not honoured, bringing the total cited in the warrant to roughly 30 billion won. Cha denies the accusations, characterising the probe as a hostile‑takeover attempt and has filed human‑rights complaints.

The case is being pursued by the Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police under the Specific Economic Crimes Aggravated Punishment Act, highlighting growing scrutiny of financial misconduct in South Korea’s entertainment sector.
