Champions League football and handball season starts
Overview
The new seasons for both the football and handball Champions Leagues have commenced, both featuring revised tournament formats.
In football, the competition now includes 36 teams in a league phase where teams play eight matches. The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, while those ranked 9th to 24th enter a playoff. In handball, the tournament has expanded to 24 teams divided into six groups of four. The top two teams from each group advance to a main round, while the third and fourth-placed teams move to the European League. Defending champions Barcelona are competing in Group E, and Macedonian champions Vardar has returned to the elite level in Group B. The handball season also features three German clubs—SC Magdeburg, Füchse Berlin, and MT Melsungen—competing in the same tournament.
