Aquaculture thefts in Chania Coast Guard arrests two men for stealing fish from aq
Authorities in Chania, Crete, conducted operations to address thefts at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE) aquaculture facilities in Souda Bay. Following reports of theft, the Chania Port Authority and Coast Guard pursued suspects who attempted to flee in a motorized vessel. During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned a secondary boat containing nets, fish, and ice. Two Greek men, aged 27 and 33, were eventually located in Almirida while attempting to hoist the abandoned motorboat. One suspect reportedly jumped into the sea to evade capture before surrendering. Investigations indicate the suspects may be linked to at least two previous thefts at the site involving fish, security cameras, and other equipment. The estimated value of documented stolen goods exceeds €10,600. Seized items included two boats, two vehicles, a trailer, and approximately 210 kilograms of sea bream and sea bass, which are slated for donation to local charities.
