Cheetah death in Kuno National Park

Overview

A 19-month-old male cheetah, identified as KNG22, has died in Madhya Pradesh, India, after being wounded by gunfire. The animal was discovered injured in the Sheopur Territorial Forest Division, outside the protected area of Kuno National Park.

Veterinary teams performed emergency surgery to remove five firearm pellets, but the cheetah succumbed to internal injuries to its lungs, spine, and shoulder region. This incident represents the first recorded death of a cheetah by gunfire since the species was reintroduced to India in 2022.

The Indian Union Government has deployed a high-level central investigation team, including representatives from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), to examine the circumstances and review security protocols for Project Cheetah. Local officials have noted that the death does not appear to be a retaliatory killing related to recent livestock predation, as the locations were approximately 100 kilometers apart.
