Cheikhou Kouyaté, the 36-year-old former Senegal national team captain and Premier League midfielder, has announced his retirement from professional football. Kouyaté revealed that he has managed a congenital heart condition since birth. He disclosed that he often kept the condition private from his family, national team doctors, and clubs to avoid being forced into early retirement. He noted that the condition caused pain and cramps, especially in high altitudes or heat, and required medical monitoring every six months during his time in England. The athlete stated that his medical status impacted his career and contract negotiations, noting that Nottingham Forest reduced a potential contract length due to his health, and that Leeds United declined to recruit him. A potential move to Anderlecht in Belgium was also reportedly prevented following a medical examination. Kouyaté’s career included significant stints at West Ham United, Crystal Palace, and Nottingham Forest, as well as winning the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. His international career featured 92 caps, four goals, and appearances in the 2012 Olympics and the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Former teammate and goalkeeper Khadim Ndiaye praised Kouyaté’s leadership, describing him as a ‘model captain’ who often used personal funds to support the national team and prioritized team cohesion.
