Following Xabi Alonso’s July 2026 squad overhaul, Chelsea began their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham on August 24. João Pedro, wearing the number nine shirt for the first time, scored just 31 seconds into the match. Following the game, Pedro signed a contract extension running until 2034. Pedro’s early-season form continued in a 4-3 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, where he recorded a goal and an assist for Cole Palmer. Consequently, Pedro was named the EA Sports Premier League Player of the Month for August 2026 via a public vote, finishing ahead of teammate Cole Palmer and six other nominees. This made him the first Chelsea player to win the award since September 2024. Electronic Arts noted it will not release a special Player of the Month card for the Ultimate Team mode in EA FC 27. Alonso described Pedro as a “very complete and intelligent” player, highlighting his effectiveness both inside and outside the penalty area. In further squad stability moves, Chelsea announced a long-term contract extension for Portuguese international Pedro Neto, securing him until 2032. The 26-year-old has become a regular under Alonso, notably adapting to a right wing-back role. Having made 108 appearances with 40 goals and 40 assists, Neto contributed to the club’s UEFA Conference League and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup successes. Regarding the extension, Neto stated, “I feel like home here, I feel like I want to achieve more things here.”
