Scientific experts have raised concerns regarding the safety of bottled water when exposed to high temperatures and direct sunlight. Research indicates that heat can cause hazardous chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalate esters, to leach from PET plastic bottles into the water. These substances are identified as endocrine disruptors. In high summer temperatures, environmental factors like parked cars can reach approximately 60 °C, which may alter the taste and smell of the water. While short-term sunlight exposure to sealed bottles may not pose a significant risk, experts warn that heat increases the risk of microorganism multiplication in bottles that have already been opened. To minimize chemical release and microbial growth, specialists recommend storing bottled water in cool, dark, or shaded areas. Recent warnings from the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (Anses) and nutritionists have expanded on these risks. In extreme heat, such as car interiors reaching 60 to 70 °C, water quality can degrade chemically through substance migration or organoleptically through changes in taste and smell. Consumers are advised to discard water exhibiting an unusual plastic taste, abnormal odor, or a visibly deformed bottle. Additionally, risks have been identified regarding water filtration pitchers. Anses warns that saturated activated carbon cartridges can cause ‘reverse pollution,’ where a used filter releases previously trapped toxins back into the liquid. Improper maintenance of these devices can also lead to bacterial biofilms, signaled by a chlorine or earthy taste, a moldy odor, or the presence of black spots and slippery films on the equipment.
