Chemical hazard in Rudeš industrial zone

Overview

In the industrial zone of Rudeš, dangerous and flammable chemicals remain at five sites, including a former pulp-and-paper laboratory. Although the Agency for Environmental Protection of Montenegro and a licensed firm extracted approximately 85 tonnes of hazardous material four years ago, inspection records indicate that roughly 110 tonnes of toxic waste still remain.

The presence of these chemicals poses fire and contamination risks to the nearby Riversajd refugee settlement, which houses thousands of people. While the abandoned plants are privately owned, state authorities have claimed the issue falls outside their jurisdiction. Local residents continue to call for comprehensive inspections and remediation to prevent accidents that could endanger lives and the environment.
