Chhattisgarh water conservation achievements

Overview

Chhattisgarh has achieved the top national ranking in India for water conservation during the third phase of the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB 3.0) initiative. This community-driven program is part of the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign.

Data presented at a national summit in New Delhi indicates the state registered 79,775 water conservation structures, with 77,719 successfully completed. Five districts—Surajpur, Mahasamund, Balod, Balodabazar-Bhatapara, and Kabirdham—ranked among the top ten performers in the country. This represents an improvement from previous phases where the state ranked second nationally.

The state’s success is attributed to grassroots participation from farmers, Gram Panchayats, and local volunteers. A notable innovation is the ‘5 Per Cent Model’ in the Koriya district, where farmers voluntarily dedicate 5% of their agricultural land to groundwater recharge structures. The state's strategy emphasizes rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and the protection of drinking water sources through community-led efforts.
