Chicago White Sox postseason ~~advancement~~ run and ~~papal interest~~ Munetaka Murakami

Munetaka Murakami’s performance decline through mid-September was previously a major concern, characterized by a high strikeout rate and a significant dip in batting average. However, his ability to reach the 30-home run milestone by September 7 provided a boost to the White Sox offense. By the conclusion of the 2026 season, Murakami’s resurgence was cemented as he finished his rookie year with 33 home runs. His contributions helped the Chicago White Sox secure their first postseason berth since 2021, ending a period of three consecutive seasons with over 100 losses. The White Sox became the first team in MLB history to reach the playoffs following such a prolonged period of struggle. Following a 9-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies, the White Sox officially lost their chance to win the AL Central division, as the Cleveland Guardians clinched the title. Despite this, the White Sox secured their postseason spot as the third wild card team. In a 6-1 victory against the Rockies, Murakami hit two solo home runs, bringing his season total to 35 home runs and making him the leader for Japanese players in home runs this season. The White Sox concluded their regular season with an 84-78 record. Following their Wild Card Series victory against the Houston Astros, the White Sox have advanced to the American League divisional round. This postseason run coincided with correspondence from Pope Leo XIV to White Sox president Jerry Reinsdorf. In a letter dated September 9, the Pope expressed gratitude for a previous event at Rate Field and noted the ability of sports to foster “friendship, solidarity, and peace.” When asked by media regarding the team’s improbable playoff appearance, the Pope declined to comment on a potential ‘miracle,’ noting that ‘great things happen in Chicago.’
