Former Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, Chidimma Adetshina, remains under house arrest in Cape Town as the Department of Home Affairs pursues her deportation. Following her arrest in June 2026, authorities alleged that Adetshina and her mother, Anabela Rungo, used fraudulent documents to obtain South African identity papers. Officials claim Adetshina entered the country illegally via the Lebombo border from Mozambique, leading to the cancellation of her and her son’s South African identity documents. Adetshina and her legal team continue to contest her prohibited-person designation, arguing she was born in Soweto and has lived her entire life in South Africa. Her lawyers have suggested alternatives to detention, such as fortnightly reporting to immigration officers, while noting a potential loophole in the South African Citizenship Act that could allow her to apply for citizenship if her birth and residency can be proven. The legal proceedings have been marked by tension, including anti-migrant slurs shouted by onlookers at the Cape Town Regional Court, which drew condemnation from the Nigerian Union South Africa.
