Chihuahua water scarcity and agricultural crisis

Overview

Mayors from Delicias and Saucillo in Chihuahua are petitioning federal authorities and Conagua to extract water from the Naica mine to address a severe agricultural crisis. Due to a lack of rainfall, local dams have reached low capacities, threatening livestock production and the upcoming agricultural cycle.

The proposed emergency project involves a 30-kilometer gravity-fed conduit to channel water from the mine to the Las Vírgenes dam. Local officials state that the underground water volume in the mine is approximately equal to the capacity of the La Boquilla dam. Current shortages have already limited irrigation to only four out of every ten hectares, posing a risk to the regional economy and the daily production of 1.2 million liters of milk.
