Overview
Researchers from the University of São Paulo and the University of Bonn have developed an innovative vaccine strategy for the chikungunya virus. The method utilizes a genetically modified pathogen designed to replicate only once within an organism, providing enough stimulus to train the immune system without the risk of causing disease.
Technical details indicate that researchers interrupted the virus’s maturation process by replacing a human enzyme sequence with one from a plant virus, ensuring the pathogen cannot infect new cells after its initial replication. In mouse trials, a single dose provided sufficient protection.
Because this approach avoids the risks associated with traditional attenuated virus vaccines, it may be safer for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and immunosuppressed. Scientists suggest this technological platform could potentially be adapted to combat other arboviruses, including Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and SARS-CoV-2 variants.
