Child labor and exploitation in Mexico

Overview

Data from the 2025 National Survey of Child Labor (ENTI) indicates that 3.5 million children and adolescents in Mexico, or 12.6% of the 5 to 17 age group, are engaged in child labor. This figure represents a slight decrease from 13.1% in 2022. The labor is divided between 1.6 million minors in prohibited occupations—including approximately 1 million performing dangerous work—and 1.7 million engaged in unsuitable domestic chores. Primary sectors involved include agriculture and livestock, services, and commerce.

Demographic and geographic disparities exist, with higher rates observed among Indigenous populations and in states such as Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Economic drivers include food inflation and loss of household income.

Parallel to economic labor, experts have warned of a lack of official data regarding the recruitment of minors by organized crime. Criminal groups are reportedly using social media platforms like TikTok to attract youth through false job offers and promises of money. This vulnerability is underscored by statistics showing 6,837 deaths due to aggression against minors between 2020 and 2024, and over 18,000 missing minors reported as of June 2026.
