Child welfare and abuse trends in the Czech Republic

Overview

Reports from the Czech Republic indicate a rise in child abuse and psychological trauma. The Children’s Crisis Center noted an increase in cases involving physical abuse, sexual abuse, cyber threats, and self-harm. Clinical psychologist Zora Dušková observed that physical abuse has grown in both frequency and brutality since the COVID-19 pandemic. Sexual abuse was identified as the most frequent reason for intervention, accounting for 28 percent of cases.

Broader systemic concerns have emerged regarding child welfare and the effectiveness of the Authority for Social and Legal Protection of Children (OSPOD). In 2025, 11,441 cases of abuse, neglect, or maltreatment were recorded, representing an increase of 1,286 cases from the previous year. While public scrutiny of social worker oversight has increased, the Association Child and Family (Asociace Dítě a Rodina) noted that social workers are limited by the inability to monitor households constantly.
