An investigation by Consumer Reports identified potentially harmful contaminants in several popular packaged snacks marketed to children in the United States. Testing of 21 products showed that 14 contained concerning levels of substances such as acrylamide, which can form during high-temperature cooking, or phthalates, which may migrate from packaging into food. While heavy metal levels were largely non-detectable, the report identified issues with acrylamide in 13 products, glycidyl esters in seven products, and phthalates in ten products. Lead scientist Eric Boring stated the study aimed to provide parents with information beyond nutritional facts to assist in making better snack choices. The Consumer Brands Association noted that many of these substances occur naturally or are formed during food preparation. Concerns regarding child nutrition expanded following reports of food standard breaches in English secondary schools. A review by the charity Bite Back found that three-quarters of 391 surveyed schools breached government standards by frequently serving foods high in fat, sugar, or salt. Specifically, 53% of schools offered banned snack products, and 57% served meat products like burgers and sausages more than the permitted twice per week. The charity’s chief executive, D’Arcy Williams, described the findings as “very alarming” and suggested the system is failing children. This follows the U.S. findings regarding chemical contaminants like acrylamide, glycidyl esters, and endocrine-disrupting phthalates in commercial snacks.
