Chile drug‑testing reforms in government

Entities: Secretariat of Anticorruption and Good Governance · PAN · Claudia Sheinbaum · Radio and television broadcasters · Chilean Constitution

Overview

In late July 2026 Chile's deputy finance minister, Juan Pablo Rodríguez, resigned after a June drug test returned a provisional positive result. He denied drug use and called for further independent testing, while Tomás Bunster Bustamante was named interim deputy minister.

A few days later, President José Antonio Kast signed a constitutional reform that would make illicit drug consumption a ground for dismissal of public officials and require drug‑test results to be public. The legislation, aimed at ministers, legislators, governors and other officials, was presented as a response to the Rodríguez case and an effort to standardize drug‑testing rules and combat organized crime.

No further developments have been reported in this matter as of the latest snapshot.
