Chile economic performance and growth trends
Overview
Chile's economic performance has faced renewed downward pressure following a significant contraction in July. While the second quarter of 2026 saw a 0.2% GDP decline—largely due to a 6.4% drop in mining—the July Imacec (Monthly Indicator of Economic Activity) reported a -1.5% decline, further complicating the outlook. The July contraction has been attributed to various factors, including copper mining issues, maintenance, and adverse weather conditions affecting productive activities.
The Central Bank identified these operational and climatic factors as the primary drivers behind lower mining production. While the decline may not signal a new recessionary phase, it highlights the economy's vulnerability to sector-specific disruptions. Analysts note that low investment and weakening wholesale trade in construction materials are hindering sustained expansion, posing long-term risks to job creation, real wage growth, and fiscal revenue.
In response to the July data, Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz announced that the government will downwardly adjust its annual GDP growth projections in the upcoming October Public Finance Report. Despite this, Quiroz maintained that the long-term outlook remains positive. However, the downturn drew criticism from former Finance Minister Mario Marcel, who described the results as “very negative in all lines.”
In the Atacama region, the decline has highlighted significant development gaps. While the region generates substantial wealth, disparities in the urban quality index for Copiapó and Vallenar suggest uneven developmental progress. Consequently, there is an increased focus on stimulating investment, employment, and economic diversification within Atacama to support the local workforce.
