Chile hantavirus outbreak response

Entities: Hantavirus · Ministry of Health of Chile · Ministry of Health (Chile) · Atacama Region · Alejandra Pizarro

Overview

In late July 2026 Chile reported a severe hantavirus pulmonary syndrome case in the rural commune of Palena, Los Lagos region. A 37‑year‑old woman required mechanical ventilation and ECMO support after being transferred to a hospital in Concepción. Health officials began contact tracing and monitoring, noting no secondary infections and raising the national tally to 45 confirmed cases for the year, with a regional lethality rate above 55%.

Three days later the Ministry of Health issued the country’s first hantavirus health alert, covering territory from Atacama to Magallanes. The decree, published in the Official Gazette on 28 July, extended to 13 of Chile’s 16 regions and will remain in force until 31 July 2027. It grants extraordinary powers for rapid procurement of supplies, hiring specialised staff, and intensified epidemiological surveillance, and is framed within a “multi‑threat” response that also addresses dengue, Zika, chikungunya and avian influenza.

The alert was prompted by a sharp rise in case fatality, now 39% (46 infections, 18 deaths) compared with 18% the previous year. Public guidance stresses ventilating rural houses, disinfecting surfaces with chlorine, sealing waste, avoiding rodent contact, and seeking immediate care for fever, severe muscle pain, or breathing difficulty.
