Chile’s health system continues to face challenges regarding waiting lists and inequitable access, though efforts toward decentralization and infrastructure development are underway. In the Los Ríos region, a 230 billion peso investment is advancing construction for hospitals in Los Lagos (70% complete) and Río Bueno (63% complete). The Ñuble Regional Hospital project has reached a significant milestone, receiving provisional acceptance without observations. While the facility previously faced staffing and funding concerns, approximately 90% of necessary equipment has been awarded, with 77% already on-site. The project is now entering a post-sale period awaiting sanitary authorization, with plans for a gradual relocation of clinical services involving equipment installation and calibration. To reduce the need for patient transfers to urban centers, several regional hospitals are expanding specialized services. The Hospital Dr. Leopoldo Ortega Rodríguez in Chile Chico has increased capacity by incorporating neurosurgery and implantology rounds, including ultrasound-guided procedures for pain management to serve the General Carrera Province. Similarly, the Hospital de Calama Dr. Carlos Cisternas has successfully performed its first cataract surgeries, allowing residents of El Loa Province to access outpatient microsurgery and intraocular lens replacement locally rather than traveling to Antofagasta. In the Valparaíso Region, officials inaugurated the Miraflores Alto SAR in Viña del Mar, a facility designed to provide 24-hour emergency care and advanced imaging for 109,000 people. Additionally, Health Minister May Chomali has pledged administrative support for an Integral Wellbeing Center for the Elderly in Quillota. Within the Chiloé Health Service, officials are coordinating the transition to new hospitals in Ancud and Quellón. A delegation led by Director Francisco Camilo Díaz visited the Hospital San José de Melipilla to study change management and operational processes for relocation.
