Chile post‑storm reconstruction efforts

In late July 2026 the Chilean government began a multi‑track response to the extreme frontal system that devastated the Atacama and Los Ríos regions. It approved a National Reconstruction Law that temporarily exempts value‑added tax on new homes to lower purchase costs and activated a National Reconstruction Fund, offering tax‑incentivised donations of cash, goods or construction services for rebuilding infrastructure over a two‑year period.

A few days later, senators pressed the executive for firm financing guarantees. Senator Matías Walker conditioned his support for a broader reform on a binding budget commitment to rebuild the Coquimbo and Atacama regions, citing damage estimates of $500‑700 million. Deputy Francisco Crisóstomo called for activation of the constitutional 2 % emergency fund and an agricultural emergency declaration to aid farmers and families still affected by the storm. The political push underscored the need for swift, reliable funding to complement the earlier reconstruction measures.
