Chile water security and economic contraction risks
Overview
Central Chile is experiencing a shift in hydrological patterns, characterized by decreasing total precipitation and more concentrated, intense rainfall events. Researchers note that historical records show much more abundant rainfall in previous decades, whereas the strengthening of the South Pacific Semi-permanent Anticyclone now creates an atmospheric block that hinders frontal systems.
This changing water availability poses significant risks to the national economy. Water is a critical driver for Chile, supporting approximately 60% of the GDP through sectors such as agriculture, mining, tourism, and sanitation. However, economic growth has been linked to a three-to-three-and-a-half-fold increase in water consumption since 1990. The combination of climate change and historical overconsumption of surface and groundwater resources presents a growing challenge to the country’s regional economic specializations.
Reflecting these economic pressures, the Central Bank reported a 0.2% annual contraction in Chile’s GDP during the second quarter of 2026. This decline was largely driven by a 6.4% drop in mining activity and a decrease in fishing. While non-mining activities, such as commerce and personal services, showed growth, they were insufficient to offset the mining slump. The labor market has also faced pressure; while unemployment was 9.4% between April and June 2026, it reached 9.5% for the May-July 2026 quarter. While the Central Bank has lowered its 2026 growth projections to between 1% and 1.75%, certain sectors like energy and water remain identified as primary drivers for potential investment.
