Chilean artisanal fishing economic support
Overview
Following frontal systems that struck the Coquimbo region in July, the Chilean government launched a $600 million extraordinary recovery and economic reactivation program. This initiative, announced by the Subsecretaría de Pesca y Acuicultura, aims to support artisanal fishers and small-scale aquaculture operators by funding repairs for boats, engines, diving equipment, port infrastructure, and processing plants across ten regions.
To further mitigate economic pressures, the government has also implemented fuel subsidies through the ‘Pesca Artesanal’ coupon under the ‘Chile Sale Adelante’ plan. This measure provides monthly transfers to help small-scale fishers manage rising fuel costs, which can represent between 30% and 60% of their operational expenses. The fourth installment of these subsidies has reached thousands of workers nationally, including hundreds in the Coquimbo Region.
