Chilean border security reinforcement

Overview

Under the ‘Plan Escudo Fronterizo’ (Border Shield Plan) of the José Antonio Kast administration, the Chilean Army has begun reinforcing the northern border in the Arica y Parinacota and Tarapacá regions to combat irregular migration, smuggling, and organized crime.

Initial efforts involved the installation of massive reinforced concrete tetrapods, weighing approximately 16 tons, and the digging of three-meter-deep trenches at vulnerable points along the border with Peru. These physical barriers are being integrated with technological surveillance, including the Integrated Border System (SIFRON), sensors, and night surveillance technology.

By late October, Defense Minister Fernando Barros reported that approximately 11,900 meters of border trench are operational. Officials stated that irregular border crossings have decreased by more than 85% compared to the previous year, while smuggling seizures have increased by 225%.
