Chilean educational demographic and access trends

Overview

Chilean educational data shows significant shifts in student demographics and access. Between 2017 and 2024, foreign student enrollment in the school system rose by approximately 255%, reaching an estimated 275,900 students in 2024. This population, which represents about 8% of total enrollment, is concentrated in the Metropolitan Region, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta. International organizations have recommended policies focusing on language instruction and cultural mediation to support integration.

Concurrently, there has been a notable increase in university admissions for students from vulnerable socioeconomic backgrounds. Data from the Ministry of Education indicates that admissions for students in the most vulnerable quintile rose from 594 in 2022 to 4,370 in 2026. Similar growth was observed in the second quintile and among high-performing students in lower socioeconomic brackets. Additionally, the first-year retention rate for the 2025 cohort reached 77.9%, the highest recorded since 2007.
