Overview
Artisanal fishing representatives from Chile’s Los Lagos and Aysén regions have formally requested urgent measures from the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture to address the overexploitation of southern hake. Fishing unions and environmental groups, such as Oceana, have proposed expanding biological bans, establishing minimum catch sizes, and protecting spawning grounds to safeguard coastal livelihoods.
In response to these ecological concerns, Sernapesca has implemented a national biological ban on common hake throughout September. This ban prohibits the capture, transport, processing, and commercialization of the fish during its peak reproductive period. Authorities have launched a public awareness campaign, ‘Que no le vendan la pescá’, to encourage citizens to report illegal sales.
While hake stocks remain under protection, there has been a noted shift in resource availability with the reappearance of mackerel in traditional fishing zones, following previous scarcity linked to warmer waters.
