Chilean Ministry of Cultures budget cuts

The Chilean government has proposed a 2027 budget that includes significant funding reductions for the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage. Initial reports indicated a 10.1% decrease in total allocation, dropping from a 2026 base of $489,899 million to $440,518 million. This reduction would impact programmatic activities for arts and culture by 12.6% and cultural investment initiatives by 64.8%.

Subsequent details clarified that while the nominal decrease is 16.5% compared to the 2026 budget, the practical decrease is estimated at 10.1% due to technical adjustments. Specific areas facing sharp declines include resources linked to the Ministry of Public Works, which face a 96.9% reduction, and the National Fund for the Promotion of Books and Reading, which is expected to decrease by 21.8%.

Proposed increases are limited to the creation of the National Fund for the Promotion and Development of Handicrafts and funding for Chile’s participation in the 2027 Frankfurt International Book Fair. While Minister Undurraga has stated that sufficient funds remain, official associations have raised objections citing “technical inconsistencies.”
