Authorities in Spain and Croatia have issued separate alerts regarding Chilean mussels. In Spain, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) issued an alert for Marvalmar brand cooked Chilean mussels in 200-gram vacuum-sealed trays. The alert follows the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in a specific batch distributed in Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, and Castilla y León. Health officials advised consumers to return the product to the point of purchase. In Croatia, the State Inspectorate recalled specific batches of whole, cooked, and frozen Chilean mussels sold by Metro Cash & Carry in Zagreb. This recall was prompted by suspected exposure to ionizing radiation used for sterilization. Although authorities noted that ionizing radiation does not make food radioactive, the products were deemed non-compliant with EU regulations because the treatment occurred in facilities not authorized by EU member states. Recent updates from AESAN confirm that a specific batch of Marvalmar cooked mussels (Lot 387/21096 1809, best before 20/11/2026) is flagged for Listeria monocytogenes contamination. These 200g vacuum-packed trays were distributed across the Community of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, and Castilla y León. Consumers are advised to refrain from consuming the product and to seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
