The Chilean government continues to defend its decision to join the ‘Shield of the Americas’ (Escudo de las Américas), a U.S.-led cooperation agreement involving approximately 15 to 16 countries. Defense Minister Fernando Barros has maintained that the pact is designed for information exchange to address organized crime and does not compromise national sovereignty or involve military intervention mechanisms. This initiative has faced criticism from former presidents Michelle Bachelet and Gabriel Boric, who have raised concerns regarding national sovereignty and strategic autonomy. In response to these developments, response, Chinese Ambassador to Chile Niu Qingbao remarked during a ceremony commemorating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China that while Chile has the sovereignty to join any international platform, the bilateral relationship between China and Chile should not be influenced by third parties. He emphasized that China does not require Chile to align with specific ideological blocs. Ambassador Qingbao also reiterated that the ‘China-Chile Express’ subsea cable project is a transparent commercial initiative that poses no threat to national security, expressing hope that Chile would resist foreign pressure regarding the project. In a recent strategic development, Chile announced a major military modernization plan aimed at strengthening its presence in the Magallanes Region and enhancing its projection toward Antarctica. The initiative includes constructing new military bases to secure airspace between the Ice Fields and the South Pole, alongside significant equipment upgrades. These upgrades involve replacing aging F-5 fighter jets with fourth or fifth-generation aircraft, renewing Bell UH-1H helicopters, modernizing Leopard 1 tanks, and replacing C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The government intends to incorporate unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and enhanced maritime patrol capabilities by 2027, supported by a budget exempt from recent government-wide reductions.
