Political discourse in Chile has centered on a struggle over the concept of “social order,” which has become a point of contention between right-wing, left-wing, and social democratic factions. This conflict is framed as a battle for cultural hegemony, where different groups vie for moral and intellectual leadership within civil society to define what is considered legitimate and democratic. Drawing on theories of Antonio Gramsci, observers suggest that social order is a political and cultural construction rather than a neutral state. An “organic crisis” is noted when a ruling class loses its ability to maintain hegemony through persuasion and must rely on coercion. Internal friction has also emerged intensified within Chilean political structures. On the left, the Socialismo Democrático bloc and Socialist Party leaders, including Juan Luis Castro, have moved to remove Senator Pedro Araya (PPD) from his presidency of the Constitution, Legislation, Justice, and Regulation Commission. This follows concerns regarding Araya’s cooperation with right-wing members on legislation involving migration and organized crime. Araya has accused the Socialist Party of practicing “socialismo autoritario” following autoritario,” claiming his removal from the Senate’s Constitution Commission. Araya suggested the removal was is retaliation for his support of supporting security initiatives aligned with President José Antonio Kast’s government, while committee leadership defended government. On the decision as a response to political differences regarding right, President Kast faces challenges in maintaining coalition unity. Tensions have emerged with Evelyn Matthei, who has criticized the security agenda. government’s centralized decision-making and lack of cohesion amid disinformation campaigns.
