Chilean President José Antonio Kast has experienced a significant decline in public approval. Early September 2026 polling from Cadem and Agenda Criteria placed his approval ratings between 30% and 34%, with disapproval reaching as high as 61%. This downturn is linked to economic concerns, including a 1.5% contraction in the monthly activity index (Imacec) in July 2026, as well as dissatisfaction regarding security and employment. By mid-October, political pressure intensified regarding the upcoming seventh anniversary of the October 18, 2019, social unrest. Kast decided not to hold an official government act, opting instead for a “look toward the future” and condemning the violence of the 2019 period. This stance drew criticism from within his political sphere, including Johannes Kaiser of the Libertarian National Party, who called the silence a “bad political decision.” Recent polling indicates the President’s approval has fallen to 30%, his lowest level since the start of his administration, while disapproval has reached 65%. Public sentiment regarding the country's direction is increasingly negative, with 69% of citizens believing Chile is on the “wrong path” and 68% expressing pessimism about the future. This decline extends to the cabinet; of 18 ministers with over 40% recognition, 17 saw a drop in approval. Additionally, 64% of those surveyed believe the government should reinstate a dedicated spokesperson, and 60% support eliminating the power of presidential pardons. By late October, approval ratings dropped further, falling below 30% for the first time. Cadem reported approval at 29% with 66% disapproval, while Criteria reported 27% approval and 64% disapproval. This decline is largely attributed to public outcry over the government's decision to reduce sentences for 56 individuals convicted of sexual offenses against minors, a move 92% of respondents disagree with.
