In late July 2026 Chile’s Ministry of Public Works marked two milestones in the Chiloé archipelago’s transport network. On 30 July the 16‑kilometre Castro bypass, a variant of Route 5 intended to divert heavy‑truck traffic from the provincial capital, was inaugurated despite lingering safety concerns. The bypass, delayed since its 2015 launch, reached the contractual deadline and aims to ease chronic congestion in central Castro. Two days ~~later,~~ later officials reported that the three concrete pillars of the 2.7‑km Chacao suspension bridge were completed, ~~bringing the project to~~ reaching maximum heights of 157 m (south), 175 m (central) and 199 m (north). The bridge is about 66 % ~~overall physical progress. The bridge, slated~~ physically complete, represents an investment of roughly US$1 billion and remains on track for an October 2028 ~~opening,~~ opening. The next construction phase will install the main suspension cables in 2027 – fabricated in South Korea – followed by the deck and road surface in 2028, with steel components from Italy scheduled to arrive in September.
