China and Turkey high-speed rail expansion
Overview
China and Turkey have announced significant expansions to their high-speed rail networks. In China, a new 318-kilometer line connecting Harbin and Yichun has opened in Heilongjiang province. This project, which includes the country’s highest-latitude high-speed station, required specialized engineering to overcome permafrost challenges. The new route reduces travel time between the two cities from approximately seven hours to under two hours.
In Turkey, progress has been made on the Halkali-Kapikule high-speed rail project, which is funded by the European Union. Following the scheduled opening of the 153-kilometer Çerkezköy-Kapıkule section, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inaugurated the new link in Kırklareli province. The project aims to integrate Anatolian production with European markets by connecting domestic industry to the single European market. Once the full project is complete, travel times from Istanbul to the Kapikule border are expected to decrease from four hours to roughly 1.5 hours, while freight travel times are projected to drop from 8.5 hours to 3.5 hours.
