A diplomatic dispute has emerged between Argentina and China following social media comments made by Juan Pablo Carreira, the Digital Communications Director for President Javier Milei’s administration. Carreira, known online as ‘Juan Doe’, attributed a catastrophic natural disaster in Nepal—which resulted in over 1,000 deaths—to the mismanagement of a Chinese state-owned company building a hydroelectric facility near a glacier. Carreira stated, ‘The Communist Party, dressed as an ‘entrepreneur,’ kills.’

In response, the Chinese Embassy in Argentina condemned the remarks as ‘malicious rumors’ fueled by ‘biased ideological prejudices.’ The situation escalated when China formally summoned the Argentine ambassador in Beijing to lodge a complaint. Because the ambassador was on vacation, Counselor Guillermo Alberto Simunovich attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Beijing expressed frustration over the lack of an apology from Argentine officials. Beyond the social media comments, China also raised broader concerns regarding the exclusion of Chinese companies from international tenders in Argentina and ties between Argentine libertarian figures and Taiwan.
