China is advancing its Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST) nuclear fusion project in Hefei, Anhui province. The project, led by the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has entered a critical assembly phase and has commissioned its campus facility. Engineers have passed the halfway mark for the main reactor assembly and are currently working on the reactor core and installing precision instruments within the vacuum vessel. The reactor is designed to use powerful superconducting magnets to confine plasma at temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius. As of October 2026, the project has reached a significant milestone by completing more than half of the main reactor assembly. Designed as a successor to the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), the BEST facility aims to transition from laboratory-scale experiments to large-scale engineering applications. The reactor will utilize a mixture of deuterium and tritium to demonstrate the feasibility of net energy yield. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Researchers aim to conduct experiments around 2030 to demonstrate net fusion power and the production of usable electricity using deuterium-tritium plasma, building upon previous milestones achieved by the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). electricity, serving as a foundation for future commercial reactors.
