China debt levels and economic implications
Overview
Reports indicate significant debt accumulation involving China both internationally and domestically.
World Bank data shows that 30 nations owe China a combined total of approximately $1.031 trillion. Russia holds the largest share at roughly $169 billion, followed by Venezuela and Pakistan. The combined debt of Russia, Venezuela, and Iran accounts for 30.1% of the total debt among the 30 countries studied.
Internally, China’s non-financial sector debt has risen to over 300% of its GDP, a 60 percentage point increase since late 2019. While central government debt is relatively low at 30% of GDP, local government obligations, including financing vehicles, reached an estimated 127% of GDP last year. This domestic debt has driven industrial capacity and residential construction, leading firms to export surplus goods like electric vehicles and solar panels to manage debt, which has increased trade tensions with international partners.
